QUESTIONS:

How can I forward my email to a different account?

Why am I getting a bunch of emails from my Mercyhurst email address in the email account to which I am forwarding?

Why are there messages in the Deleted items folder of my Mercyhurst account when I forward my messages to another email account?

ANSWER:

Yes, email can be forwarded to a different email account. The Exchange Server allows users to set up email forwarding using the Webmail interface. Users can create a rule to automatically forward email from their Mercyhurst email account to another email account of choice.*

Please note that creating a forwarding rule through Webmail means:

  1. that a copy of all messages will be saved in the users' Deleted items folder on Exchange.
  2. **the sender of the messages to the other email account will be the users' Mercyhurst email account, i.e. – messages will not appear to be from the original sender. Users will not be able to reply by simply clicking the Reply button. They will have to type in the address of the original sender.

To forward all messages to another account:

  1. Log on to OWA.
  2. Click the Rules tab on the lower left corner of the screen.* If the tab is not visible, click the white arrow on the lower left corner of the screen to expand the button bar.
  3. Click the New button to create a rule that will forward all messages to your preferred address. Fill in the appropriate boxes to customize the rule to your needs.
  4. Choose Forward it to.
  5. Enter your preferred email address in the box to the right.
  6. Uncheck the option to Keep a copy in my inbox.
  7. Click the Save and Close button at the top of the screen.
  8. Click OK button to "This rule will apply to every message you receive"

*This can only be done using Internet Explorer to view Webmail.

**For example, assume you@mercyhurst.edu has his email forwarded to you@yahoo.com. jblow@hotmail.com then emails you@mercyhurst.edu. you@yahoo.com will receive a message that has you@mercyhurst.edu as its sender rather than jblow@hotmail.com. you@mercyhurst.edu will have to click the Reply button, delete his address, then type in, or copy and paste in, the jblow@hotmail.com address.
